How do I know if Spravato® is Right for Me?

Spravato® facts and Benefits

Spravato® is prescribed as a treatment for individuals with treatment-resistant depression or major depressive disorder and is taken under the supervision of a healthcare provider alongside an oral antidepressant.

How does Spravato® work?

Spravato®, also known as esketamine, works by increasing levels of glutamate in the brain, which is a key chemical messenger involved in mood regulation. Unlike traditional antidepressants, Spravato® acts on the glutamate system instead of targeting serotonin or dopamine. By modulating the glutamate system, Spravato® helps to stabilize mood, reduce the severity of depression, and delay the return of depressive symptoms. It is often prescribed alongside oral antidepressants to provide relief for severe symptoms of treatment-resistant depression. This unique mechanism of action makes Spravato® a game-changer in the treatment of depression.

Spravato® is FDA approved for adults aged 18 and above, with a mandatory two-hour medical monitoring period in the office before returning home. It is important to note that driving or operating machinery is not recommended for the rest of the day after administration, so it is necessary to arrange for someone to assist with transportation to and from appointments. However, after a good night’s sleep, individuals can safely resume driving and normal activities.

What is Esketamine?

Esketamine is a medication that is used to treat depression, particularly in cases where other medications have not been effective. It is derived from a drug called ketamine, which is commonly used as an anesthetic.

Esketamine works by targeting certain chemicals in the brain, specifically glutamate, which is involved in mood regulation. By affecting the way these chemicals work, Esketamine can help alleviate symptoms of depression. Like any medication, it can have side effects, such as dizziness or changes in blood pressure. Regular monitoring is necessary to ensure its effectiveness and safety.
